A few times a month I like to pop into the Xbox and PlayStation game stores just to see which games are appearing among the top sellers. Surprisingly I often see some notable differences between multiplatform games and how they are selling versus one console to another.
While the major heavy hitters generally sell well on both platforms, sometimes there are games that slip through the cracks and do exceedingly well on one platform as opposed to the other.
The last several times I have checked in on the “Top paid” section of the Xbox store, one game has surprised me with how long it has been featured near the top of the top paid category. Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba-The Hinokami Chronicles.
Now I don’t know how accurately the Top Paid section of the Xbox store lines up with actual sales numbers but I’m guessing that it is fairly representative of how well digital games are selling on Xbox in comparison to other games.
Currently, going by the Xbox store Top Paid game order, Demon Slayer is the 4th game listed. The $70 Digital Deluxe edition is coming in at 9th place. As someone who is fairly well plugged into console gaming news, I am fairly astounded that this game was doing so well for several reasons.
- I have no idea what Demon Slayer is and never heard of the game.
- This is clearly a Japanese game and it’s a bit odd to see a seemingl obscure Japanese game selling so extremly well on Xbox.
- It’s strong sales either suggested to me that either the game was extremyl good, the franchise was really popular or some combination of those two possibilites were true.
So, I did a little bit of research and ok, things make more sense to me now. It appears that Demon Slayer is a hugely popular anime series. How popular? Well, this game that I and surely many others never even knew existed is dominating the Xbox store charts in October. This trailer for a Demon Slayer movie released in 2020 has 19 million views.
Though the anime series seems to be relatively new on the scene, it has captured the attention of many North American anime fans. It seems to be an instant hit and Demon Slayer is probably a franchise you will be hearing a lot about in the coming years if you don’t know it already.
So yea, it appears that Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba-The Hinokami Chronicles is a pretty big-time game on Xbox. Looking at the trailer I have to see it does indeed look very pretty and fun. Good for you Demon Slayer devs, you are killing it!
