Xbox Series S gets right what Xbox All Digital Edition got so wrong
The Xbox Series S is going to be $299, small, and it will play all Xbox Series S games. This is how you make a cheap, attractive, modern console.
Last year I was quite disappointed when Microsoft revealed the Xbox One All Digital Edition. Rumors were circulating around for months that we were going to get a cheaper, digital-only version of the Xbox and my mind began to raise at the possibilities.
With project X-Cloud on the horizon at that time and Xbox Game Pass really getting into its stride, it seemed like a very cheap, very portable, version of Xbox One could be a huge seller.
Well, the Xbox One All Digital Edition wasn’t any of those things, it was pricey, it was no smaller than an Xbox One S, and it gave consumers very little reason to grab one unless they were simply desperate to save $50.
There was nothing exciting about that console; thankfully Microsoft has remedied that problem with the newly announced Xbox Series X.
Good things come in small packages
The Xbox Series S is everything I hoped it would be. At $299 it has a great entry-level price point for any gamer who wants to get in on the next generation. Its small form factor is also excellent because the console is more portable. If you are an adult who travels a lot or a kid who visits their friends and family all the time, portability makes a console very attractive.
With a $299 price tag in year 2 or 3, we could see Series S console go on sale for prices as low as $199 or maybe even $150. That is huge because the hardcore gaming community is known to double-dip. When gamers are passionate about a product, they aren’t afraid to buy another version of it if they feel like they have a reason.
Look at all of the gamers who have bought multiple Nintendo Switches or the gamers who have bought newer models of systems they already own just because they look cool or have minimal upgrades.
The combination of a low price point and a small attractive form factor will even convince some gamers who wouldn’t normally pick up an Xbox to grab one. Maybe you are a PC gamer whois interested in playing your game pass games on the go or at home on your couch or the a bedroom TV from time to time. Maybe you are a PlayStation 5 owner who is curious about some Xbox exclusives and figure $299 (or less during a sale down the line) is worth it to get in on those games cheap.

Xbox continues to provide consumers with options
The Xbox Series S is yet another way gamers can get their hands on future Xbox games in the coming years. With Xbox Game Pass, xCloud, and the good old fashioned method of simply buying games through the Xbox digital store, the Series S will provide cheap versatility for any consumer who wants to dip their toes into the next-generation of gaming without completely breaking the bank.
The ultimate plan is clear, give gamers an abundance of choices when it comes to how they want to play Xbox games. You can opt to play them on PC, you can opt to play them on extremely powerful console hardware or you can opt to play them on the affordable Xbox Series S.
Microsoft seems to be doing everything right on the hardware end of things, now they need to come through with the software. Right now I absolutely love what they have done with the Xbox Series S, I hope the price point for the Xbox Series X is just as appetizing and I hope that soon they show off what their powerful premium console can do.
