It is absolutely shocking, crazy, impossible news that the Xbox game pass may be coming to the Nintendo Switch. I was made aware of this news from a rumor article on Game Informer last month.
That could mean Xbox exclusive games appearing on another game console. Some see it as Microsoft throwing in the towel on Xbox consoles, some see it as a one sided deal that only benefits Switch players.
Microsoft could see’s it as an opportunity, and maybe concerned Xbox players who feel like they may be “giving up something for nothing” should see it that way too.
First of all, this is all just a rumor and many believe this has already been debunked. With that being the case, there still could be a future where Xbox games could appear on the Switch; If this were to ever happen, could Xbox fans actually benefit from a deal such as this?
I think there is almost zero chance we will see Nintendo games show up on an Xbox console ever but if Game Pass is available on the Switch and it becomes a popular service on Nintendo’s machine, that could ultimately mean, more Japanese games could be developed for the xbox.
Speculation as it currently stands, is that if Game Pass were to appear on the switch, many, if not all of the games would be played through xCloud streaming.
One reason for this is that the switch just isn’t powerful enough to run some Xbox One games and it certainly won’t be capable of running the next generation Xbox titles.
xCloud streaming however would negate the power problems as you can stream games to any device as long as you have the proper internet connection.
If Game Pass became a popular service on the Switch it would give developers an easy route to put their latest games on the popular platform
The Switch is the hottest selling console in the world and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Third party Japanese games that totally skipped Xbox this generation may see it as profitable to bring games to the next Xbox because they can also get them on switch through xCloud/Game Pass.
Games like Persona 6, Yakuza series, Nioh, Earth Defense Force, Nier Automata (which originally did not release on Xbox), and others may not be able to afford passing up on an Xbox version because they want to hit of those Japanese Switch consumers.
This is a possibility I have yet to see mentioned during all the Xbox/Nintendo speculation but I think it’s one that merits some thought.
I have referred to Game Pass as the Trojan Horse of gaming before because it has essentially been the means through which Phil Spencer has convinced the higher ups at Microsoft to open the checkbook and produce first party games.
If Game Pass eventually does wind up going to Switch and that ultimately does result in more Japanese games coming to Xbox, then maybe The phrase Game Pass will become the 21st century form of Trojan Horse when it’s all said and done.
