The Xbox Game Pass Service continues to show how it can raise awareness for games

Microsoft’s subscription-based videogame service seems to keep generating ways to shake up the industry.

On October 1, 2020 Doom Eternal entered the Xbox Game Pass library and in just 4 days, it has managed to increase its player base ten-fold according to Reddit user u/bjki1107.

The graph shown above is from u/bjki1107’s Reddit post and it displays a huge spike in Doom Eternal’s user base since the title entered Xbox Game Pass. This isn’t the first time a game has hit Game Pass and seen a big spike in its player base.

Descenders, an action cycling game developed by Dutch game studio RageSquid, has seen a big increase in success after its addition to Xbox Game Pass.

“If I take the month before we went into Game Pass, and compared it to sales of the game last week, we’re now selling around five times as many units each week as pre-Game Pass, on a weekly basis,” he said.

“Since we went into Game Pass, our total Xbox sales have tripled.”

One of the side benefits of a game being on Xbox Game Pass is increased marketing. Games get more visibility to Xbox users and their friends who see them playing these games. According to Microsoft’s head of planning for Game Pass Matt Percy, pre-orders and purchases of other titles in game franchises associated with game pass often go up.

“On average we see a 25 per cent increase in franchise pre-orders and a 10 per cent increase in franchise sales coming from games that go into Game Pass,” Percy says. “And that’s coming from Game Pass members discovering they really love franchises and following along with them”.

With Xbox Game Pass having recently gained over 15 million subscribers, the sky is the limit for possible growth after a game hits the service. Let’s hope that as the years go on and Game Pass continues to grow both consumers and developers find increased benefits from the service.
