TimeSplitters is back and better than ever thanks to backward compatibility of Xbox!

The TimeSplitters franchise is a classic science-fiction first-person shooter series. Created by the development team Free Radical Design (which consisted of a number of developers who left Rare, the makers of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64), TimeSplitters gained a passionate following of fans over the series lifespan thanks to its unique mix of gameplay and story.

I passed this franchise up for whatever reason during its heyday but last year I decided to go back and experience what made these games so special. Unfortunately, I was shocked to learn the games were not on PC and I would have needed to bust out some old consoles and buy disc copies to play them.

I didn’t want to invest that much effort in trying the franchise so I just resigned myself to the fact that I would never get to play these games. Well, Xbox just made playing TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect much easier.

During today’s Xbox 20 year celebration stream, Microsoft announced that they are adding 70 more games to their backward compatibility program for Xbox One and Xbox Seris consoles. Many classics were added to the list such as Max Payne 3 and Jedi Outcast II but the TimeSplitters series is the real jewel on today’s backward compact crown for me.

Here is the full list of new games available on Back Compat.

TimeSplitters has been pretty much unplayable legally unless you had a PlayStation 2, OG Xbox, or Gamecube. The series was stuck on that old hardware and that means many gamers such as myself were either prohibited or completely locked off from playing any games in the franchise.

With TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Imperfect both coming to Xbox via backward compatibility, that changes today. To make matters even more pleasing, both of these games will receive some benefit from being on much powerful hardware.

Keep a lookout for when these games are made available live. If you have a disc version of either of these games on Xbox, you should be able to pop it in and start playing starting November 15, 2021. It is also extremely likely that both games will be available to purchase digitally at some point starting on the 15th as well.

Are you a big fan of TimeSplitters Are you excited to play them on Xbox? Could this be the first Salvo in the glorious return of the TimeSplitters franchise? Drop a comment and let us know!
